To celebrate my birthday, my parents offered to keep the kids so we could take a weekend trip. After our summer trip to Asheville, we decided to go to Boone this time. I knew I wanted to go to Rough Ridge at sunset so that’s what we did on our first evening there.
It was an easy hike (.75 miles/1.5 miles RT) and we went all the way to the summit and then came back down to what I understand the locals call Lion King rock. We thought the views were better there and at some of the other platforms, than at the very top. I would say Lion King rock is about 3/4 or less of the way up?
We got lucky that it wasn’t too busy at sunset and all the groups there took turns taking pictures and taking pictures for one another. It suddenly got cold quickly and I’m glad I brought my jacket.
Also, people keep saying that it is scary looking the way we are sitting on the rock. It’s a bit of an optical illusion — it looks like it’s narrow rock to climb out to, but in reality it’s a huge deep rock.
The views were simply stunning. We also had a nice view of the Linn Cove Viaduct from here.
The amazing Linn Cove Viaduct.
