If you don’t want your peonies to fall over, I will show you how to make cheap and easy peony cages for a fraction of the cost of peony supports available for purchase. I’m using the term “make” here loosely as it’s so easy, it’s hardly even a DIY. You buy tomato cages and cut them in half and voila — you now have two peony supports.
These flower supports will work for any flowers, not just peonies. Mine are useful for milkweed in my garden that likes to flop over mid-season.
I fell in love with peonies after attending a peony workshop at a nearby farm several years ago. I finally got around to planting my own in 2020 and I have twelve plants now.
Supplies Needed to Make Flower Supports
- Tomato Cages (silver)- $3.99/each – You can get whatever size you want, probably the medium to large size is best.
- Wire Cutters

Typical peony cages – $8 – $20 each
DIY peony cages – $1.99 each
Cost savings – $6 -18 each
That is a huge cost savings, especially if you have a lot of plants.
How to Make Peony Cages
It’s so easy. You just cut the tomato cage in half. You want to cut it right above a ring because the three legs will go into the ground.
Now you have two super cheap peony cages from one tomato cage.
This is how the peony cages look before the growing season begins.
Once the foliage comes in, you can barely see them, but they are there for support. Always get the silver. They are hardly noticeable and blend in. The green ones are deceptive. They do not blend in and stand out. Go with the silver!
